Did you know the Chase Sapphire Preferred card has lots of hidden benefits that you probably don’t know about?

To apply for credit cards in this post, please click on Cards in the Main Menu at the top of the page (shown below) to help support my small business. For Southwest and Capital One, you can also use the links within the post. I greatly appreciate it!

Apply for Travel Cards

It is my FAVORITE travel credit card, and one I think EVERY TRAVELER should have. I personally think it’s a great option to use for your everyday spending instead of a debit card, a cash back card or an airline or hotel card.

And right now, you can earn 75,000 points after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months.

This flexible card is affordable with a $95 annual fee, has a consistently HIGH bonus and works well with my plan to help you fly your family free anywhere in the U.S., Caribbean and Europe.

It’s well known for its benefits, including:

  • 2 points for every $1 you spend on travel purchases on the card
  • 3 points for every $1 you spend on dining, streaming or online grocery purchases on the card
  • Awesome sign-on bonus after meeting a minimum spend in the first 3 months
  • Instantly transfer points at a 1:1 ratio to Southwest Airlines to use to book FREE flights

But… there are some lesser-known perks of this card that you should ALSO know that further my case that this is the BEST travel credit card to help you fly free.

10 Hidden Benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

1. Points Are Worth DOUBLE Paired With the Southwest Companion Pass

Southwest Companion Pass

Possibly my FAVORITE perk of this card is how well it pairs with the Southwest Companion Pass. The Southwest Companion Pass lets one person FLY FREE with you for the life the pass (up to 2 years) on ANY flight you take on Southwest Airlines.

Because the Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points (my favorite flexible points system), which transfer instantly to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio, if you hold the Southwest Companion Pass, that means every Chase Ultimate Reward point you earn is worth DOUBLE.

Why? Because you’ll be able to bring someone with you FREE for each point you earn. The only thing they will pay is the $5.60 mandatory government fees per way.

2. Trip Cancellation Insurance

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card comes with lots of automatic insurance benefits that most people don’t know about when you use the card to make purchases. The first is its trip cancellation insurance.

If your trip is canceled or must be shortened because someone gets ill or due to weather, they will reimburse you up to $10,000 per person and up to $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, which include things like airfares, tours and hotels.

3. Baggage Delay Insurance

We all dread the moment we realize our bags didn’t make it with our flight as we stare at the carousel, hoping they will just appear. In case they don’t, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card has you covered — at least monetarily!

This insurance will cover things like toiletries and clothing for delays longer than 6 hours. They will pay up to $100 per day for 5 days.

4. Trip Delay Insurance

Is your trip delayed for more than 12 hours or do you have to stay overnight somewhere due to delays? Let Chase Sapphire Preferred know!

You’re covered for unreimbursed expenses, including meals and lodging, up to $500 per ticket.

5. Primary Car Rental Collision Damage Insurance

This is a big one! Most car rental insurance on credit cards is “secondary,” which means you have to report any incidents to your own car insurance company first and then the credit card insurance kicks in for anything they didn’t cover. That means your premiums will go up, as well.

PRIMARY car rental collision insurance, which comes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, means that the card’s insurance will pay FIRST, so you don’t HAVE to report it to your own auto insurance company.

Of course, you’ll have to pay for your rental with it to take advantage :).

6. Purchase Protection

Online shopping

Did you buy something with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card only to have it damaged or stolen immediately? Help is on the way!

You’re covered for the first 120 days after you purchase an item if it’s damaged or stolen up to $500 per item and $50,000 per account.

7. Extend Warranties an Additional Year

Another great perk is that when you buy an item with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card it will extend the US Manufacturer’s Warranty of 3 years or less by an additional year.

8. No Foreign Transaction Fees

Do you have an overseas trip coming up? My family loves to fly to Europe on miles! (Get a plan for your family to fly free to Europe inside my Secrets of a Travel Journalist Club).

The good news is that you can use Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for purchases internationally without paying an additional fee.

Be sure to use your card to pay for all dining and travel expenses so you earn DOUBLE or TRIPLE points to keep your points balance full for future FREE travel!

9. Zero Delivery Fee for DoorDash

DoorDash Chase Benefits

Another perk of Chase Sapphire Preferred is a free DashPass, DoorDash’s subscription services that nets you $0 delivery fees. DoorDash is a service that will deliver foods to your home from local restaurants.

You get a complimentary DashPass from DoorDash, which grants you 1 year of free delivery and lower service fees on eligible orders for a minimum of one year when you activate by Dec 31, 2027. Now you only have to pay for the meal and NOT the delivery fee when you use your Preferred card!

10. Earn an Additional 100,000 Points Every Year

Finally, did you know that in addition to the points you can earn by signing up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and meeting the minimum spend, you ALSO have the opportunity to earn 100,000 points EVERY year?

You can earn 15,000 points per person you refer to apply for Preferred up to 100,000 each year. That is a LOT of points that make it worth sharing the benefits of free travel with friends and family.
